Care and Precautions It is recommended to have your surfaces sealed every 12 to 18 months depending on usage. Coasters are suggested under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of many stones. Although stone countertops are stain and scratch resistant, we still recommend you use trivets or hot pads to avoid possible disaster. Stone surfaces can be maintained with mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Avoid products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids. A few drops of bleach can act as a disinfectant. Blot the spill with a paper towel immediately. Don’t wipe the area — it will spread the spill. Flush the area with plain water and mild soap, and rinse several times. Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat as necessary. Oil-based stains (grease, tar, cooking oil, mild cosmetics) are the most common and will darken the stone. Normally, they must be chemically dissolved so the source of the stain can be flushed or rinsed away. Clean the surface gently with a soft, liquid cleanser containing bleach or a household detergent, mineral spirits or acetone. |
