Granite

Granite is one of the most resilient and lowest-maintenance countertop materials available. Its strength is gained by high concentrations of the mineral quartz, which is rated 7 out of 10 on the Mohs’ scale of hardness (a diamond is a 10). As a result of its geological composition, granite is stain, scratch and burn resistant. Desired for its natural beauty, granite is an investment that amortizes over time, retaining its original appearance long after initial installation.

Marble

Marble is a durable material that adds elegance to any room including bathrooms, and kitchen floors and counters. Use marble to soften a room’s feel. Since marble is more porous (and therefore softer) than granite, it is more prone to staining, etching and scratching, but depending on your lifestyle, it can still be an exceptional kitchen countertop surface. Ask about honing marble for a matte finish that reduces visible surface wear.

Travertine

Travertine is one of the softest and most porous natural stones available. It is perfect as a flooring material and as counters for low traffic areas such as bathrooms, fireplaces and art niches. Travertine is a great way to add warmth to any room. Brushed and antiqued (tumbled) travertine is a new and trendy material to use as a kitchen countertop backsplash.

Limestone

Limestone is a widely used, elegant building stone typically used as facing on buildings, but it is also common in the home. A distinguishing characteristic of limestone is the presence of fossils that are frequently visible in the stone surface. Using limestone adds a classic look to any surface.

Onyx

Onyx is one of the most dynamic and impressive natural stones available. This material is best suited for areas without much traffic and where it could truly be enjoyed as a piece of art, such as shower walls, fireplaces and other vertical installations. Onyx is a translucent natural stone that can be backlit for a dramatic effect.

Soapstone

Although it is the softest of all natural stones, soapstone is a very resilient material that naturally patinas (ages) with time. This product has a chalky feel characterized by the talc in the stone. Once installed, it is easily maintained by conditioning it with a light coat of mineral oil. Consider soapstone for a rustic look.

Quartzite

Quartzite is considered one of the hardest and most durable natural stone materials available. The reason for this is due to its higher percentage of quartz composition. Yet similarly to granite, it rates a 7 on the Mohs’ scale of hardness. Quartzite slabs tend to have more veining and exotic colors than their other natural stone counterparts.
